Rough Blazingstar (Liatris aspera) is perhaps one of the most striking flowers on the prairie. These showy wildflowers are often sold by nurseries for flower gardens. These hardy perennials prefer shaded to full sun in dry, moderately poor soil. Blazing star has a clustered spike of blue-violet flowers that appear in July. Plants grow about 2-3 feet high. The flowers are beneficial to butterflies and other insects. Looks great in flower gardens. It can take 3 to 4 seasons to mature under the best conditions.
