The Common Milkweed (Asclepias syriaca) is the one of the most common roadside weeds and is often found in waste places and empty lots. These hardy perennials prefer shaded to full sun in moderately dry, moderately poor soil. Milkweeds have large fleshy leaves and a bitter milky sap. A cluster of dull purple flowers appear in July and the classic milkweed pods appear in late summer. The downy part of the seed pods were once used to fill life jackets. Plants grow to about 3-4 feet high. The flowers are very beneficial to butterflies (especially the Monarch) and other insects. It can take 3 to 4 seasons to mature under the best conditions.
